Rachel Wang; Guest Lecturer at UCL East: Incorporating Sustainability into all Business Methods
This exciting project was borne from a random encounter with a stranger, who has since then become a good friend. Early one autumn morning, I arrived at London Museum Docklands to attend a London Screen Archives conference “undocumented’. I had been invited by the lovely team at Film London to do a talk about how Chocolate Films uses archive within their documentary work.
Before the conference started I rushed over for a desperately needed coffee; looked around for a place to sit before the days’ events began. I sat next to a man who had a table to himself so there was plenty of space for spread my stuff out. We immediately started a healthy and lengthy conversation about media engagement for young people, which has lasted for the past two years. The man was Richard Palmer, head of the 2nd year education and career department at UCLEast. A thoughtful and open person, Richard was interested in the range of ways I work with young people to inspire them in their own career path in the creative industries. He quickly introduced me to Professor in Interdisciplinary Education, Anne Preston and our ideas for working together ignited.
Having conducted key note speeches for several institutions over the years, I relished the opportunity to share my experience and inspire the current UCL East students to discover more about my knowledge and journey.
Over the past 4 months I have conducted lectures for second and third year undergraduates at UCL East. I have focused on the origin story of Chocolate Films and my own career path, how to integrate sustainability into business methods, what is a social enterprise and why social businesses are arguably the future model for all business ventures.

UCLEast sits within the pristinely new Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. Close to the special newly opened museum, V& A East ( check out Chocolate Films interpretation video content in the permanent collection when you are next there!) , Sadlers Wells and the BBC; it is a hub of vibrancy and creative possibility. This whole new quarter is inspiring to see grow and flourish. The UCLEast campus has amazing facilities with a large and incredibly well stocked kit & equipment room for filmmakers and a flash surround-sound cinema; One Pool Street Cinema.
